After-hours guidance
If it’s outside 9am–9pm or you can’t reach us right away, use these steps to stay safe and comfortable until we call you back.
When to go to a hospital instead
Uncontrolled bleeding, trauma to the head or jaw, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or swelling that’s closing your eye.
Manage pain safely
Paracetamol or ibuprofen per pack instructions. Avoid aspirin directly on the gum. Cold compress in 15-min cycles.
Save the tooth
For a knocked-out adult tooth, store it in milk or saliva and call within 60 minutes for the best chance of saving it.
Don't wait it out
Persistent throbbing, fever, or spreading swelling means infection. These worsen quickly overnight — request a callback.
What to do right now
Follow the steps for what you’re experiencing while you wait for us to call you back.
Severe toothache
- Rinse gently with warm salt water.
- Floss carefully to remove any trapped food.
- Take paracetamol or ibuprofen as directed on the pack — never place tablets against the gum.
- Cold compress on the cheek for 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off, to ease swelling.
Knocked-out adult tooth
- Handle the tooth by the crown only — never the root.
- If dirty, rinse briefly in milk or saline. Do not scrub.
- Reinsert into the socket if you can, or store in milk or saliva.
- Call us immediately — the first 60 minutes are critical.
Broken or chipped tooth
- Save any fragments in milk or saline.
- Rinse the mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress.
- Cover a sharp edge with sugar-free gum or dental wax to protect your tongue.
- Book a same-day appointment to prevent further damage.
Facial swelling or abscess
- Swelling that spreads to the eye, neck, or floor of the mouth needs urgent care.
- Use a cold compress and keep your head elevated when resting.
- Do not apply heat and do not squeeze the swelling.
- Call us now — if breathing or swallowing is affected, go to a hospital emergency department immediately.
